This summer I will search for adventure and push myself to the limit!
It all started with an innocuous challenge from an office colleague;
for those of you who know me a little will know that this is enough to pique my interest and rise to the challenge.
I received an invitation to participate in a sponsored trip --
but not your average walk five miles through nature kind of trip!
The challenge is this: ride a bike from the shadows of Big Ben, London, to the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
To put this into perspective, I clock up an average of 15-20 miles per year, so as you can imagine, this will be tough!
To make this pain a little easier to bear, I'm looking for all those who know and care about me
to show their support by offering their sponsorship.
All the money collected will go to Action Medical Research to help fund their Touching Tiny Lives project.
Action Medical Research was founded more than 50 years ago
and leads the way in medical research and the search for as yet unknown answers and cures.

I promised Action Medical Research 1500 euro. Initially I "sold" my 500 kilometres that I have to bike
between London and Paris. I never could have dreamed that I would succeed, with only the support of friends
and family, to reach this objective!

How far I will succeed on this last trip depends in the first instance on the extra amount I will collect

My training, planning and realisation:

I am starting to get nervous, The London to Paris bike ride is approaching rapidly!
Next week it all will happen.
I finished my training program.
I biked, since March, 3030 kilometres.
That is more than the distance home to Rome and back!
I made a couple of 100 kilometre trips to places I love.
Eight times I woke up at 4 o'clock in the morning to bike to the office...
I cannot complain about the weather. Participants from Great-Britain are less lucky.
Only once I had to bike home through a shower rain.
Five times I slowed down in an unconventional way, if you know what I mean. Luckely without any harm.
The main reason are the specials pedals I installed on my bike.
They increase my performance, but they are less secure.
Once I had a flat tire, and twice I had to replace the outer tire.
Once again I want to thank everyone who gave me their support the last couple of months.
My sponsors made it possible to reach my primary objective of 1500 euro much sooner than expected.
A couple of friends gave me useful advice and/or logistic support.
I really have the feeling that these friendships became stronger than ever!
I may not forget to mention my employer. Everything started in my company.
A substantial contribution to Action Medicical Research was promised for everyone who would participate
in the London to Paris bike ride.
This promise starts to be given concrete form by a matched giving for donations of colleagues.
This week I will relax a little bit. Maybe I will make a couple of small trips, with a maximum of 60 kilometres on Saturday.
On Friday my bike will get a full maintenance.
I have to pack my bags in time.
Of course I will keep an eye on the weather forecast.
Monday I will send my bike to London with the Eurostar, and I will leave on Tuesday.
Once in London, I will bike a "prologue" of 20 kilometres from Waterloo Station to my hotel.
And on Wednesdaymorning, at 7 o'clock, the start signal will be given.
The final countdown started...

Frequently you can hear me say: it could be better, it could be worse...
I am less than one month away from my bike ride London-Paris.
On a regular base friends, colleagues and family continue to sponsor me.
A few months ago I was convinced that at the end I had to pay myself a part of my final target of 1500 euro.
Today I have collected already a big bonus!
The training could be better... My bike is suffering from mechanical problems. In less than ten days,
my (outer) back tyre has broken twice. I never heart that this was possible. Maybe I'll need a new rim.
We'll see. And once my bike is repaired, I will pick-up my training again. I am doing this for you,
dear sponsor!

A big THANKS to everyone who sponsored me!
Against all odds I succeeded to sell all five hundred kilometres between London and Paris.
Beside that, other things -- inferior but essential -- are sponsored too:
registration, train to London, bike clothes, champagne, ...
And I am expecting still more sponsors. Therefore today I took the decision to include, after my four
days of biking between London and Paris, an extra trip, starting in Paris, direction home.
I will bike the distance that still will be sponsored on this trip.
Because these kilometres are of a "special class", I priced them a little bit higher. The first kilometres
(501-514) I am selling at four euro, next (515-525) at five euro, next (526-535) at six euro, and so on.
At one hand I am hoping to raise that way a substantial extra amount of money for Action Medical Research,
at the other hand I hope that this trip will count not too many kilometres... Wanna bet?

Yesterday, after one week abroad, I continued my training-program. I biked 60 kilometres,
and for the first time I had to last the rain. This did not increase the fun, the contrary was true.
But how sure can you be of the weather in July?
Something that frustrates me more and more is at one hand the attitude of many car drivers
and at the other hand the poor quality of the Belgian infrastructure for bikers.
Maybe I will report more about this another time.
Beside this, everything is okay. I am less saddle-sore than I was afraid off,
and longer distances don’t scare me off anymore. I am even taking into consideration a trip to Oostende,
110 kilometres one way.
Also the sponsorship runs smoothly. Many people support me and sponsor me for the Action Medical Research.

I have, with the good advice of Action Medical Research, planned a training of total 3000 kilometres.
I am satisfied with my progress. I stay close to the scheme, even with two weeks of business trips.
Up til now my longest trip was home-Scherpenheuvel-home, a total of 149 kilometres.
Tomorrow I will bike for the first time to the office.
I am looking forward to it. The shortest way is right through Brussels. That's out of the question.
I will make a deviation via Zaventem. With the GPS mounted on my bike it must be possible.
The alarm will sound at half passed four. It will be a long day...
